Veteran's Day 11/11/11...

I wanted to share some interesting Veteran's Day story - so how about this one...

Our Kathy, finally after years of searching, found the man who was on the POW bracelet that she wore in high school and for years beyond.

In Kathy's words...
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year, I just actually spoke to Col. Willis Forby, the POW of Viet Nam (whose bracelet I wore in high school) who was shot down and captured on September 20, 1965 and finally released on Feb 12th, 1973...after being a prisoner for 7 years and 5 months. He attributes his survival to his "great faith in God and the knowledge that my country would succeed in its mission after which I would be permitted to return." He told me to keep his bracelet as a reminder of all those lost in so many wars and to continue to pray for those serving now. Believe me, I was in tears.

Moonlit Night Card

Beginning with our Moonlight Mist CardStock, stamp our Tree (G-1496) image and our Beach/Snow Fence (F-224) image with Perfect Medium Pad & Emboss with BlackDetail Embossing Powder...

Then lightly swipe in one direction the Brilliance Pearlescent Ice Blue Stamp Pad across the entire card...

Wipe the card with a paper towel...

THEN...

Using your pinkie finger… Take a SMALL drop of Brilliance Moonlight White ReInker and make a small moon in the sky. Use another of your DRY fingers to spread the white ink to create a hazy or blurry effect of the moon.

Additionally, using perhaps that same inky pinkie finger, smear the Brilliance Moonlight White Ink about ¾-1” along the bottom of the card to create the effect of snow on the ground under and through the fence to add depth. Wipe this with a paper towel.

Again, using the Brilliance Moonlight White ReInker, paint with a small detail brush on only one side of the fence uprights and the top side of the branches creating the effect of snow which “sticks” to the Tree (G-1496) branches and Beach/Snow Fence (F-224).

Finishing touches might include our Warm Words (E-917) stamp using an Adirondack Pitch Black stamp pad. The Stamps used in this card are also available as a cling set called appropriately – Moonlit Night Acrylic Stamp Set...

Resist Technique

In this example, our very own Kathy K (Seaside Stampin' Ink) shows a cool resist technique.
Start by stamping Frankincense (DD-1420) which is included in our DaVinci Theme Acrylic Mount Stamp Set with a Ranger Perfect Medium Pad on our special glossy card stock:

As it dries, load a stamp stomper from our Mini Spritzer Combo Kit with a few drops of dye reinker in various colors:
Use a mini spritzer filled with rubbing alcohol (91% works best & costs the same) to spray the stomper:

Swipe the stomper across the piece of glossy cardstock:

Watch the magic and see how the resist pad did its job and, well, resisted the ink so the stamped images stood out:

Once this has dried, which does not take long, use an Adirondack Dye Ink Pad - Pitch Black
pad to stamp Leda's (E-1323) face onto the card:

Cut out a post-it note mask and placed it over the image:

This is done so you can use additional images to fill the card without marring the face:

A silver Krylon Leafing Pen makes a quick and instant border:

Lift off the mask to reveal the finished card:

Spritzer Kit Techniques Using Some of Our Wonderful Images

Dye inks are a staple in any stamper's arsenal, and our dear Kathy K (Seaside Stampin' Ink) shows us here how to use them to make an easy, elegant card illustrating one of the many techniques included in the Seaside Mini-Spritzer Kit. Start by spraying a piece of glossy cardstock using a Mini Spritzer filled with rubbing alcohol and a few drops of an Espresso Adirondack reinker:

Wave the cardstock partially dry to separate the color:

Once it is completely dry, stamp H-1236 Santa, K-1230 Silent Night, D-1333 Believe, and the branch tips of G-1496 Tree onto the cardstock with an Espresso Adirondack Ink pad:

Then sponge around the edges with a Butterscotch Adirondack ink pad:

To add depth, layer with Adirondack Latte ink on top:

A Ginger ink pad adds an even richer look:

A bit of Espresso Ink provides the finishing touch:

And here are the beautiful results:

Poor Man's Polished Stone Technique

Here our Kathy (Seaside Stampin' Ink) demonstrates another of the ways to use our Mini Spritzer Combo Kit:

Here's a terrific technique she shares with you, which she calls Poor Man's Polished Stone. Load the felt stomper (included in the kit) with a few drops of dye reinker:

Let the stomper sit for a moment while you make "blobs" of color on a piece of glossy cardstock with a Krylon Leafing Pen:

Immediately spray the cardstock using a spritzer filled with 91% rubbing alcohol:

Smear your inked-up stompers across the cardstock:

Look how the dye ink mixes with the Krylon Leafing Pen to create lovely striations of color for this beach scene:

Want to add a full moon? Just use your pinky finger to lift off a circle of color (how clever is that!):

Give the cardstock a few minutes to dry, and then stamp your images in black right over the background:

Add a finishing touch to your card by lining the edges with the Krylon Leafing Pen:

Polished Stone 2

In a previous post, you saw how to create the Poor Man's Polished Stone background demonstrated by our very own Kathy from Seaside Stampin' Ink. Here is a similar technique, but the streaks of color and stamped images are placed differently on the card:

Isn't it neat how Kathy completely changes the perspective by applying the ink diagonally instead of horizontally for the beach and adding the water? The DD-295 Water stamp really gives movement to the waves, and this unique image also doubles as tree bark when used vertically.

Kathy shows us here yet another, completely different way to use the Mini Combo Spritzer Kit. She fills a spritzer with rubbing alcohol and adds 8-10 drops of dye reinker right into the bottle:

Then she sprays it onto glossy cardstock:

She does this with a few more colors:

Until it looks like this:

She lays a piece of kitchen plastic wrap right on top of the wet surface:

And then she crinkles it:

Set this piece aside to allow it to dry. When it is dry (5-10 min.), simply lift the plastic wrap:

And this is the STUNNING result:

What a soft, pretty background! All it took to finish was a sentiment (Tradition E-1344) or (Believe D-933) stamped in black and some edging with a Krylon Leafing Pen. Look at the gorgeous finished examples:

Kathy has shared yet another great technique with our loyal and supportive customers!

We were in Philly last weekend for a show at the Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks (near Valley Forge), Pennsylvania. A GIANT thank you to all of the wonderful folks who came out and visited us there. We are truly grateful for your support. To those of you who attended the Make & Take Party last Friday evening, I hope that you enjoyed yourselves and had fun. It was a new experience for me and I was tickled with your support of a "man" working with you on our Seaside Stampin' Ink card project.

This card is the beautiful creative effort of the newest member of our design team, Vicki Follet. She will most likely read this before I have had a chance to welcome her to our team. This should be a nice surprise for her. She has been a customer of ours since "way back" in the Seaside Stampin' Ink store days and continues to offer us encouragement and support. I am sure you will agree that she is a very talented artist and we are absolutely delighted to have her!

last wednesday the prediction was for Irene to take a path well off the coast, so we left for the Hamburg, NY rubber stamp show on schedule - 7am.
my daughter called @ 11am to say that the predicted path had changed to be a direct hit to ocean city. we continued driving and got between binghamton, ny and syracuse when kelly called us again. this time they were evacuating all foreign exchange students to baltimore and there would be a mandatory evacuation for the whole town by 5pm the next day. so now we have to turn around and drive back home and get into town before the midnight deadline, when the island was supposed to be shut down for entry. so now the dilemna is how do we evacuate not only humans but 7 cats, 4 dogs and 5 birds too. we would only be able to make one trip because re-entry was prohibited on Friday. once we were out, we were out. so rounded up the kitties - they hated it. next the birds - they hated it. then the dogs - they loved it! headed to the animal hospital where the cats and small birds would spend the duration. kelly took the 2 little dogs with her to a friend in berlin, md - some 18 miles away. kathy took the 2 big birds and i took the cages and the big dogs to our daughters house in secretary, md - some 65 miles away. she has 3 dogs and a cat already, so we created a total disruption to her lifestyle. oh what fun... glued to television friday night and saturday until the power went out at her house 6:30pm saturday. still had cell phones that worked and were in contact with kelly in berlin and getting updates from her. kathy's sister lives about 2 miles form danielle and called to say that press conference would be @9am to say when we could return. mayor announced some power had been lost, sewer system was shut down from 5pm sat until 5am sunday, but that residents and business owners - (state police roadblocks required proof of residence for island entry) - could return immediately and that OC would be open for everyone by noon. so we loaded up and headed for home. kelly grabbed the first round of cats form the animal hospital and got home way before us - lots of was debris, tree limbs, leaves and junk that was not secure was everywhere, but our microwave oven still had the correct time - so we amazingly never lost power.

i got the sickest feeling in my stomach when we left town on friday as i passed the roadblocks. i knew that i could not return, so everything (including lots of memories that remained) was totally out of my control and i had no idea what i would return to... this has to be one of at least, the top 5 to 10 worst feelings possible.

So i am sitting here in a hotel in the Philly/Oaks area and i am thinking -"i do not get this "Twitter" thing. i just can't seem to buy a friend on the darn thing. justifiably too - as i can't even seem to find myself on twitter... what is up with that? so now i am attempting to to accomplish the same goal using Facebook. i find that i am equally incompetent within the facebook arena too, but i am having a bit more success attracting facebook friends. let's face it, in spite of what the t-shirt says, you can't have enough friends, can you? what i do know is this... if you search Seaside Stampin' Ink on Facebook, you find us... several times actually, which although screwed up, is WAY better than the twitter experience! now i feel a bit like Andy Rooney from "60 Minutes"... did you ever wonder?...

Stamping by the Sea 2010 - IS NOW HISTORY!

Well, the sun has set on yet one more Stamping by the Sea event. No one was arrested, killed or permanently mamed, so we did good. We did have someone with a kidney stone (major OUCH!) and another person had nasty bug bite of some kind (maybe a spider) while visiting Assateague Island.

If you attended, we hope that you had a very good time. Please feel free to share your comments about your experience at the show. This year we had 16 different class (the most ever!) offerings plus the Friday night Make & Take Dessert Reception. Got some photos your enjoyment.

New Addition to the Seaside Stampin' Ink Family

First of all, let me wish all the "Moms" a Happy Mothers' Day! I hope that your day was filled with all the joy and happiness that you indeed deserve. I did not get to see my mom, but I did have a lengthy phone conversation with her. I hope that it brightened her busy day - I think it did.

This post has nothing to do with rubber stamps, scrap-booking or paper crafting and I do apologize to you for that. I just thought that something different may be in order and you might like to hear about a happy ending...

We welcomed "Major" as the newest member of the Seaside Stampin' Ink family last Saturday. He is a 3 1/2 year-old retired racing greyhound who came all the way from Florida. He is a handsome and happy boy! I am delighted to have him and he joins 2 other dogs, 7 cats and 5 birds who also reside with us, but who really belong to Kathy & my daughter, Kelly. Tragically, we lost one of our family dogs and my personal buddy ("Rusty" - a lab mix) in March while we were attending the StampScrapArtTour Show in Philly/Oaks, PA. I did not think the loss would effect me as much as it did and I found myself in very unfamiliar territory...
So I began my research on the extensive greyhound rescue efforts all across the country as a way of dealing with the loss of dear "Rusty".
"Major" is the result of my research and my new very special companion. I saved his life and he may be saving mine. If you get a chance to meet him in person, you can't help but like him - he is just one of those kind of guys! An absolute sweetheart, he is!

You Will Not Believe This!

So we are on our way home from a show last month in a rain storm on I-95 headed north in South Carolina. All of a sudden, the truck starts shaking violently in the rear. We pull off on to the shoulder and I get out of the truck and look what I see...

As you can see (if you enlarge the photos), one stud and lug nut is totally missing, the rest are loose and totally broken off. The wheel itself is resting on the very edge of the hub! One more fraction of an inch and we could have been seriously injured... This little episode ended up delaying us for a day and a half. You just never know...

February, 2010 Show in Columbia, SC

What an interesting weekend show we did in Columbia, SC. If you were there - we thank you for coming in spite of the "rare in these parts" snowstorm. Contrary to what lots of folks apparently thought - the show did go on in spite of mother nature's surprise. Those that braved the elements had a very good time and I swear that we did not bring the snow with us...

Here Kathy is entertaining some of the "brave" customers who are captivated by her demonstration and our NEW stamp designs...

Here are a group of very satisfied customers. These ladies came to our booth, had fun learning about our products and purchased them so that they can create their very own masterpieces. WELL DONE GIRLS!
